From Berry Brothers Motorsport – 2011 Rally Bonnie Doon
On Saturday 26th March 2011, 58 rally teams from all over Australia headed to the small lake side town of Bonnie Doon, for the 5th running of Rally Bonnie Doon.
With the top 10 starters made up of some of the top teams in the country, competition was going to be fierce. Notable entries include the factory Honda team of Eli Evens and Glen Weston, VRC front runners Warren Lee and David Lethlean, and interstate competitors Jack Monkhouse and Dale Moscatt.
With our team Berry Brothers Motorsport seeded in 10th place we had a few challenges ahead of us. Another element to deal with was a swap in roles for the team with Nathan driving and Dane Co-driving.
After Special Stage 1 (SS1) we were a bit of the pace and still in 10th place, but with 8 stages in total we had time to make this up. On the next three stages we got into our groove and started to set consistent top 5 stage times. The highlight being a second place on SS4 falling only 3 seconds short of the factory Honda and with only one scary moment of a wrong call on a corner resulting in a big 4th gear 100km/h drift while skimming some of the bushland.
By the lunch time service we were in a solid 5th place with the car performing strongly and with many of the top 10 teams experiencing mechanical issues or having crashed out.
The service park gave us a great opportunity to promote our team partners and display the high level our team operates at.
With 4 stages left in the day we aimed for consistency and to stay in the game, with the top 4 being very hard to catch. With our times holding us in the top 3 or 4 of each stage we were in a good position to hold onto the top 5.
By the end of the day we had secured 4th place. For our first rally of the year we are very pleased, the car was faultless and we gave some of the countries best teams a run for their money. We now focus on the International Rally of Queensland which is the first round of the Rallyschool.com.au Australian Junior Challenge.
We would also like to thank all our team partners Yarra Valley 4WD, Eastside Mitsubishi, Castrol, Form-a-sign, JPC, Vi-PEC and 99r Brake Pads for all their support.
